Thursday 15/1/15 – Near the end of the week, so there was no group plan on the 14th day of the Europe Ski Tour. As always, everybody was free to do whatever they wanted, ski or board wherever they felt like it or just chill. I just need to book Hospitz Alm (St Christoph) for Friday lunch.
Started with cruisy run down front valley while Paula took Mel again (with rest of her family). Exploring the runs that we hadn’t skied earlier during the week, we found that the back areas were thin, wind blow and icy, so not much fun. However the front valley good. Area is so large, there is always a place to ski.
Virtually whole group met for lunch again at Petersboden restaurant at Oberlech – it wasn’t planned but happened that way. Group members then did their own thing after lunch. Some called it a day and took the Oberlech lift back to our hotel, Paula and I took Mel for some skiing and videoing, while others went back up the Kriegerhorn for some challenging runs.
Hospitz Alm booked tomorrow for 15, but will need to increase as whole group may be going.
Back at Hotel Sandhof, a sauna, then drinks downtown at the Krone outdoor bar where about half the village congregates for apres ski music, stories and gluhwein. Tonight, the hotel put on a gala dinner to cap off another brilliant day.
The White Ring ski race is run every year since 2002generally on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in January – it is the longest ski race in the world, with a 22 k course covering 5,500 m vertical and attracting up to 1000 skiers and boarders. The race course is though the villages of Lech, Zurs, Zug and Oberlech. This Saturdays race has been postponed until Sunday due to forecast poor weather (heavy snowfalls), so unfortunately we won’t get to see it this year as we should be in Val Gardena on Sunday.
Looks like Val Gardena might be getting some snow in time for our arrival – if that happens then it would be three weeks in a row when snow has arrived in time for our group – might have to rename the tour bring your own snow tour!
